The construction of the Palace Bruchsal began in 1720 by Damian Hugo von Schönborn, bishop of Speyer. He didn't rebuild the 1689 destroyed residence of Speyer but decided for a new representative palace in Bruchsal after the model of Versailles. With this location the owner of religious and worldly power also went out of the way of constant arguments with the Protestant imperial city Speyer.
In the following years various persons were in charge for the construction of the palace among them are Johann Georg Seitz and Michael Ludwig Rohrer. In 1728 on request of the palace owner finally Balthasar Neuman
took care of the project. In 1803 in the course of the deconsecrating the residence of Bruchsal fell to the house Baden and was inhabited by the Markgräfin Amalie von Baden.
From 1841 until 1848 the main building was established as male prison according to plans from the Government Construction Master of Baden Heinrich Hübsch. Model for the central building
with the four wings was the English prison Pentonville. In the meantime several additional buildings were set up and so more than 600 prisoners can be kept. Well known prisoners are Heinrich Pommerenke and Christian Klar. Pommerenke was the
longest arrested criminal in Germany. He spent 47 years there because of quadruple murder. Klar is a former member of the Red Army parliamentary group.
